Auraā€™s Vision for District 10

affordable housing and homeless services

As a renter, I understand the struggle. I will protect affordable housing units, create social housing, and the right to council to protect renters. I will provide services for the unhoused, permanent housing, and medical outreach to get them off the streets.

  • I am committed to expanding the protection and creation of rent-controlled, low-rent, and Section 8 housing. By enacting rent stabilizing legislation, I will secure affordable housing options for families, seniors, and low income individuals of District 10.

  • As housing evictions are on the rise, when elected, I will implement the right to a lawyer in eviction cases for renters. Similar laws have seen a 41% reduction in evictions nationwide. Combining this with social housing initiatives, I am committed to defending our communities right to housing.

  • With a ā€œhousing firstā€ approach, I will simplify new construction pipelines, and will provide increased mental health and addiction support to our unhoused neighbors.

  • I aim to achieve these goals by reforming our zoning laws to encourage swift development while safeguarding vital protections. By creating inclusionary zoning policies and focusing on infill development, we will create community focused housing that meets the needs of its people.

Beautiful neighborhoods and a healthy environment

We need to put climate first! I will invest in green space and parks in our neighborhoods. Plant 10,000 trees to cool District 10, and free efficient and safe public transportation.

  • With climate change firmly at our doorstep, the quickest and most cost effective means of beating the heat is with trees! On average, the addition of trees lowers street temperatures by about 3Ā°F. I will plant 10,000 trees to transform our neighborhoods into resilient spaces for community.

  • In addition, continuing on my success in opening school play yards into community spaces, I am committed to safely encouraging their development into green spaces for everyone in the district to enjoy. From gardens to basketball games, these will function as places to congregate and build together.

  • Looking to counter the violent storms of the coming decade, I am going to fund the creation of storm drains on every corner as a means of protecting our cars, houses, and streets from floodwaters. Additionally, I will support the addition of rainwater catch systems that have led to a 30% decrease in water bills annually, on average.

  • By focusing on development around public transit, I aim to give you better access to jobs, education, and services without relying on cars. Furthermore, by making public transportation free, we will reduce transportation costs which will make housing more affordable for lower-income individuals

  • Whether personal, portable, or communal, solar energy is the way of the future. When in office, I will fund community solar programs to help reduce energy costs in our neighborhood and end our reliance on fossil fuels. A similar program in Riverside is on track to provide $5.4 million in savings over the lifespan of the project.

  • By retrofitting and weatherproofing homes and building based on energy data to reduce expenditure on heating and cooling, we will not only drive down power and gas bills, but strive effectively forwards in expanding green jobs for Angelinos.

responsive city services and public safety

We need the city to work for us! I will increase the trash pick up, work directly with city departments to clean, repair, and patrol our neighborhoods.

  • By upgrading our roads with porous asphalt, speed bumps, and signs we will improve pedestrian safety, and guarantee a sure footing to base our communities on.

  • In the light of a recent crime spree in the area, we need measures to ensure our homes are safe. As such, I am committed to lighting our residential areas, developing community based policing strategies, and driving personal involvement in neighborhood safety.

  • In keeping with my goal of creating thriving community centers, I will shift the focus of public safety from reactive to preventative. Accountability with local law enforcement is important, if they take more than half of our city budget, the police should have a presence on foot to ensure the safety of our community.

  • Following pilot programs across the nation, I will create a Unarmed Mobile Crisis Team to respond to non emergency situations, such as mental health and wellness checks.

  • In an effort to curb reliance on a crumbling private banking system, lower interest rates, focus on local funding, and generate income for community development, I will push for the establishment of the first Municipal Bank of Los Angeles.

  • Directs financial support towards small business and entrepreneurs for business in our community. Also, creates opportunities for sustainable growth. I will focus on developing a robust small business presence through community banking, and support it with effective public transportation. By also furthering support for street vendors, and initiating pedestrian focused street reconstruction, I hope to build a healthy and thriving community for all.

  • Enlarging the City Council:

One of my top priorities is to push for the enlargement of the city council. By expanding the number of council members, we can enhance representation and ensure that the diverse voices and needs of our community are adequately heard. This move aims to foster a more inclusive and responsive local government that better serves the interests of residents in my district.

    Independent Redistricting Process:

I am committed to establishing an independent redistricting process to eliminate gerrymandering and promote fairness in our electoral system. By ensuring that electoral boundaries are drawn impartially, we can enhance the integrity of our elections and prevent manipulation that could undermine the democratic process. This initiative reflects my dedication to creating a political landscape where every vote counts and where the public has confidence in the electoral system.

Democracy Vouchers to Get Money Out of Politics:

I will lead efforts to pass and expand the Democracy Vouchers program. By reducing the influence of big money in politics, we can create a more level playing field for grassroots candidates and ensure that elected officials are accountable to the public rather than special interests. This initiative aligns with my commitment to promoting a transparent and accountable government that truly represents the will of the people.

Family support and Marginalized communities

We need to take responsibility in righting institutional wrongs by bringing equitable policy to marginalized communities. I will expand access to health services, ensure protection for our undocumented neighbors, and codify bodily autonomy.

  • As an Afro-Latina immigrant and former undocumented student, I support Los Angeles as a sanctuary city. This will ensure government funding for our district will not go towards assisting ICE in finding or deporting our undocumented neighbors. I also support a path to comprehensive immigration reform at the national level, and the right for undocumented folks to vote in local elections.

  • I will push the city to further provide access and funding to reproductive services and ensure that bodily autonomy is protected in our district. I will also prioritize Maternity and Parental Leave, and ease access to assistive services for single mothers.

  • I will continue to increase funding for lGBTQIA+ youth and programs to abate bullying and provide social and financial support for individuals seeking to transition. Iā€™m committed to provide equal opportunity for employment for the LGBTQ community

  • As a fellow renter, I support the extension of renter protections for pet owners. I also recognize the crisis shelters are currently facing and look to support community catch and release, and spay/neuter programs to help the animals in our homes and in our streets.

In addition, advocating for the secure transfer to permanent housing for the ponies of Griffith Park, the relocation of Billy the Elephant to a suitable sanctuary, and potentially support the proposed rodeo ban once it is rewritten with humane cultural practices in mind.

  • By incorporating local native leadership, I will seek inclusionary means of getting our city charter on the right track to a more equitable and open future. I will develop historical and contemporary cultural education programs and pursue remuneration as well.
